Which drain is backing up tells us where the blockage is
A single slow sink and a whole house backing up are two different jobs, and the difference is readable before anyone opens anything. One fixture running slow while everything else is fine puts the blockage in that fixture's trap or in the branch line behind it. A tub and a toilet going together, or a washing machine that pushes water up somewhere else on the spin cycle, puts it in the main.
Kitchen sinks are their own case. They block on cooled grease setting on the inside of the pipe, which narrows the bore gradually rather than plugging it at one point. That is why a kitchen line that has only been punched through the middle comes back.
Laundry standpipes narrow the same way, on lint and soap scale rather than grease. Bathroom lines are usually hair and the soap that binds it.

How a house line actually gets worked
The cleanout comes first. Finding it and reading what is backing up decides whether we start at the fixture or at the main, and starting in the right place is most of the job.
From there the cable goes out to the length the line needs rather than to the first thing that gives. A blockage will often let a cable through and close again behind it, so we pull back through and run it a second time. What should be left is the full bore of the pipe, not a hole through the middle of what was in it.
Chapter 03
Tree roots are a South County problem, and they come back
Roots do not break through the wall of a sewer pipe. They find the joints, because the line is the wettest thing in the yard and the joints are where it leaks. Once they are in, the pipe gives them everything they need.
Cutting them back returns the bore, and it is the right thing to do. What it does not do is make the line a line that never had roots. Knowing your sewer runs under trees is what tells you roughly when to expect the next one, and it is worth knowing rather than being surprised by.
Tree root removal is part of the residential work, and it is also part of the commercial work, because the mechanism does not change with the size of the building.
What gets handed back
The fixture running, the cleanout capped, and the ground we stood on rinsed off. The last few minutes of a drain call are the part people remember, and leaving a mess behind undoes the rest of it.
